Back to School With Essential Oils

It’s back to school time, and that means more germs, more emotions, less sleep, and you name it. Have you tried going back to school with essential oils? Some essential oils (EO’s) have antimicrobial/antibacterial properties. Many also have positive calming and focusing effects to help the whole house adjust to going back to school.

We use EO’s in our home for many different reasons, some of which I will cover in this post. I will also provide recipes to mix your own blends, and links to find the products I mention.

Kid safe essential oils

Germ Fighting

I love to use natural products when I can. With harmful substances filling our air, water, food, and many products used daily, it’s good to use natural products when possible. There are numerous EO’s containing germ fighting properties.

Here are a few kid-friendly germ fighting EO’s:

  • Lavender
  • Tea tree
  • Lemon

Germs go hand in hand with cold and flu. There are great EO blends you can buy to help ease some of the symptoms. I really love Germ Destroyer, Immune Boom, and Sniffle Stopper from Plant Therapy.
Plant Therapy offers so many blends for kids during the cold and flu season. These pre-mixed EO blends are a time saver. Or, if you are feeling adventurous, make your own. Here are some simple recipes to help you get started:

Germ Stopper Blend

42 drops Tea Tree

33 drops Lemon, Mandarin, or Sweet Orange

25 drops Cedarwood or Lavender

Combine oils in at least a 5 ml dark glass bottle (I save empty bottles for this purpose. Try to use empty bottles of oils that are in the blend you are making)

Breathe Easier Blend

40 drops Fir Needle

35 drops Lemon or Sweet Orange

25 drops Sandalwood or Cedarwood

Combine Essential Oils in at least a 10 ml dark glass bottle.

Breathe Easy Chest Rub

2 oz coconut oil

10-15 drops Sniffle Stopper

Melt coconut oil in a small glass container by placing it in hot water. Make sure the hot water doesn’t go much farther than ¾ of the way up the container. Once the coconut oil is melted you can add the Sniffle Stopper. Cover the glass container with a lid and store out of reach of children.

Hand Sanitizer

2 oz Aloe Vera jelly

4 drops Tea Tree

4 drops Lavender

2 drops Cedarwood

Combine these ingredients in a 4 oz or larger bottle with a flip-top lid to squeeze out the mixture.

Alternate Hand Sanitizer

4 oz Aloe Vera jelly

4 drops Cedarwood

8 drops Tea Tree

8 drops Orange

Combine these ingredients in a 4 oz or larger bottle with a flip-top lid to squeeze out the mixture.

I am looking forward to trying out this hand sanitizer!

Calming

Kailanie has severe anxiety from being such an awesome unicorn. Big brother, Jace, tends to have severe anxiety watching his little sister go in and out of the hospital. This anxiety has branched out to his everyday life. We use a calming EO blend on a diffuser necklaces I made for them. This helps keep them a little more mellow.

We used the diffuser necklace and calming EO blend alot during last school year. Not only was Jace excited and nervous at the same time for school last year, but he also broke his wrist the day before school started. The familiar calming scent on his diffuser necklace helped him cope with all he encountered on the first day of first grade with a broken wrist (totally his choice to go school right after breaking his wrist). The diffuser necklace and essential oils continued to help him throughout the school year.

We love using Calming Essence EO blend From Essenzia AlternaKids. We think this blend smells amazing. I frequently get comments on the lovely “hippie” smell this blend produces.

Plant Therapy also has a Calming the Child blend. This one smells a little “fruity” but good.

Some kid-friendly EO’s with calming effects are:

  • Lavender
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Sweet Orange
  • Vetiver

Here are a couple diffuser blends to try on your crowd:

Calming diffuser blend

4 drops Cedarwood

1 drop Roman Chamomile

5 drops Frankincense

Add EO’s to an essential oil diffuser

Calm Day diffuser blend

3 drops Frankincense

3 drops Lavender

2 drops Vetiver

Add EO’s to an essential oil diffuser

Mellow Soul diffuser blend

2 drops Patchouli

2 drops Cypress

2 drops Bergamot

1 drop Lavender

Add EO’s to an Essential oil diffuser

Staying Focused

If you have kids, which you probably do if you are still reading this post, you know how difficult it can be to get them focused. We like to use a focus blend essential oil to help Jace focus when he needs to do school work. It also helps keep the younger two in line too.

Here are just a few kid-friendly EO’s to calm and clear the mind to make it easier to focus:

  • Sweet Orange
  • Grapefruit
  • Vetiver
  • Bergamot

If you are not feeling adventurous enough to make your own blend, I have a couple of favorites for you to try.

We like to use a Focus Formula from Essenzia AlternaKids . This blend has an interesting smell, but it’s not bad.

We also like using this A+ Attention blend from Plant Therapy. I have been told this blend smells a little “dirty,” but not so bad a few extra drops of Sweet Orange or Lemon couldn’t fix it.

If you are feeling adventurous and would like to mix your own blends – Here are some blends that others swear by to help the whole family stay focused:

Focus blend

40 drops Grapefruit

25 Basil

25 Bergamot

10 Lavender

Combine oils in at least a 5 ml dark glass bottle.

Focus blend 2

24 drops Cedarwood

28 drops Lavender

24 drops Vetiver

24 drops Frankincense

Combine oils in at least a 5 ml dark glass bottle.

Restful Sleep

Bedtime can be quite the process in our home. Three rowdy kids that enjoy spending time together, when we are all home, can make an adventure out of bedtime. I have started putting a sleep blend in the diffuser right after bath time. I also rub them down with a blend of coconut oil, cocoa butter, lavender EO, and frankincense EO. The relaxing scent helps prepare our crowd for bed.

Some of the best oils for sleep are also the ones used in calming blends. Here are some used for sleep:

  • Lavende
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Patchouli

Sometimes it is easier to grab a pre-mixedblend of essential oils for bed time use. I love the smell of Relax & Sleep by Essenzia AlternaKids. If you do use this blend, it is strong, but smells like dreams. I try to use only one drop in the kid’s bedroom diffuser and a couple in our living room diffuser before bed.

Plant Therapy also offers a couple of sleep blends. The one we have used is Nighty Night. The smell is nice and relaxing. I like to blend it with other scents too.

In case you want to try out your own mixing abilities, here are some recipes to get you started:

Sleep blend

25 drops Mandarin

25 drops lavender

50 drops Bergamot

Combine oils in at least a 5 ml dark glass bottle.

Sleepy Sheets Spray

60 ml (2 oz) water (preferably filtered or distilled)

2 drops Cedarwood

2 drops Lavender

2 drops Roman Chamomile

2 drops Frankincense

Optional – emulsifier (helps mix the oils with the water so you don’t have to shake it like crazy every time you want to use it)

Mix ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well. Spray this mixture on to sheets before bedtime.

Final Thoughts

I hope you have enjoyed reading this post about going back to school with essential oils. As always, I learned a few new things while doing research to provide the best information I can. I put a lot of time into providing this information. I did a majority of my research on:

Please remember to use essential oils safely. I am not a doctor, or anything of the sort. I will not be held responsible for decisions other people make, especially regarding their health. Most importantly, don’t just take my word for it, or anyone else’s. Do your own research!

      1. You are too sweet!
In my, YouTube post, I spoke about ‘ghost followers’ and how they’re frowned upon. It’s true! Even on here, on our blogs, we have readers that won’t subscribe – for whatever reason. So, don’t be discouraged! I try not to myself. 😊🙏🏽
